  • The University Education Act was extended in 1959, allowing for the creation of racially exclusive universities for black South Africans. On August 1, 1959, the University College of the North was formed under the provisions of the Act, roughly thirty kilometers from the Limpopo Province town of Polokwane. The University of South Africa was appointed as the College’s academic trustee. This formative relationship was maintained until the University of the North Act (Act No. 47 of 1969) was passed by the South African Parliament, effectively ending the College status as of 1969.
