About nwu
- Across all three of its campuses, the NWU is dedicated to operating as a unified, integrated, multi-campus institution that promotes equality, redress, and internationally competitive teaching and research. Our essential activities, teaching-learning, and research are linked with community engagement and innovation in our eight faculties, the most of which offer both distance and contact students.

- There are two active art galleries at the NWU-Gallery. The main gallery, the NWU-Gallery, is located next to the Ferdinand Postma library on the North-West University’s Potchefstroom Campus and has hosted a number of exhibitions. Rosemary Marriott, Michael MacGarry, the 2010 Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner and band photographer Sean Brand are among the artists who have shown in 2011.
- The Botanical Garden Art Exhibition, located in the North-West University Botanical Garden, provides a professional gallery space for emerging local artists. MC Rood, Marguerite Visser, and Eugenie Marais are among the performers.
The Art Collection at North-West University
- The NWU’s art collection dates back to 1972 when some of the 66 artists who took part in the institution’s first exhibition contributed pieces. With the hiring of a full-time curator in 2006, the cataloguing of the NWU Art Collection was completed under the direction of the NWU Gallery. In terms of art acquisition and audience growth, this publication is part of the NWU Art Collection’s vision and purpose statement. The collection grew throughout time in an atmosphere that encouraged artistic development, and presently includes 1197 pieces of art, including paintings, sculptures, graphic works, some instances of craftwork, and a magnificent diversity of public artworks with opposing historic identities.
- With the addition of works purchased more recently by the Institutional Office, the total collection now comprises of three formerly isolated collections: the old PUK, POK, and Ferdinand-Postma Library. Maggie Laubser’s, Bettie Cilliers- Barnard’s, Judith Mason’s, George Boys’, Robert Hodgins’, JH Pierneef’s, and Christo Coetzee’s works are admired, with a respect for both modern and old masters. The current curator of the collection wants to use interactive procedures to make the collection more accessible to a wider audience.
North-West University’s Arts Department
- The North-West University is a multi-campus institution having campuses in two provinces. The North-West province is home to the Mafikeng and Potchefstroom campuses, while Gauteng is home to the Vaal Triangle Campus. The NWU arose from the merging of two institutions with distinct histories, personalities, and cultures – the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and the University of the North-West – on January 1, 2004. Staff and students from the erstwhile Vista University’s Sebokeng Campus were also included.
