Brief on  South African Theological Seminary

  • The South African Theological Seminary, founded in 1996 in Bryanston, South Africa, is a widely evangelical online education organization. Dr. Kevin Smith has been the seminary’s principal since May 2018.
  • Dr. Christopher Peppler founded the seminary in 1996 and is a founding member of the National Association of Distance Education Organizations in South Africa (NADEOSA). SATS is accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE), and its qualifications are registered with the South African Department of Higher Education and Training, which is analogous to regional accreditation in the United States in terms of quality. SATS offers undergraduate (Higher Certificate in Christian Life, Higher Certificate in Christian Counseling, Bachelor of Theology B.Th., Bachelor of Theology with a focus on Christian Counseling) and post-graduate (Higher Certificate in Christian Life, Higher Certificate in Christian Counseling, Bachelor of Theology with a focus on Christian Counseling) and doctoral programs (B.Th. Honours, Master of Divinity, M.Th., Ph.D. in Theology).
  • The Village Church, which was planted by Rosebank Union Church, is responsible for the spiritual oversight of SATS. The seminary’s theological perspective is generally evangelical. The South African Theological Seminary’s objective is to prepare Christians, especially leaders, to be Holy Spirit empowered members of God’s household by providing Bible-based, Christ-centered, and Spirit-led distance education and training within their local church setting.

Theological Seminary Programs in South Africa theological seminary

  • Christian Life Advanced Certificate (120 credits, NQF 5). The first year of the HCCL is comparable to the first year of the BTh. It’s great for people looking for solid life and ministry foundations. It also serves as a stepping stone into university education for pupils who do not meet BTh’s entry standards.
  • Christian Counseling Advanced Certificate (120 credits, NQF 5). The HCCL is a thorough training program for pastoral and lay counselors.
  • Theology Bachelor’s Degree (360 credits, NQF 7). The BTh is a three-year theological degree. We currently offer a general BTh, which is appropriate for pastors, missionaries, and Bible instructors, as well as a Christian counseling specialization.
  • Honors Bachelor of Theology (360 credits, NQF 8). The first postgraduate degree is the BTh Hons. It builds on a BTh and prepares students for MTh-level theological research.
  • Master of Divinity (240 credits, NQF 9) will be available soon. The MDiv is meant to satisfy the need for advanced pastoral training among pastors. The program is appropriate for second-career pastors because it does not require previous theological qualifications.
  • Theology Master’s Degree (180 credits, NQF 9). The MTh is a research degree that allows you to focus on a specific area of theological studies. It is designed for those who want to teach theology and serves as a stepping stone to a Ph.D. in theology.
  • Philosophical Doctorate (360 credits, NQF 10). A Ph.D. is a degree that is completed at the end of one’s academic career.
