About turnitin
- Turnitin.com was launched in the year 2000. Though the system was created to detect “frat file” plagiarism, a pre-internet method of preserving physical copies of essays for later use, it has since been adapted to cope with internet plagiarism as well.
- Students may be asked to submit work to Turnitin as part of their course or class requirements. Some students have refused to submit because they believe that compulsory surrender implies a presumption of guilt. Some critics claim that using this proprietary software violates educational privacy and international intellectual-property regulations and that it commercializes students’ work by permanently putting it in Turnitin’s privately held database.
