About Walter Sisulu University

  • Walter Sisulu University (WSU) is a technology and science university in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, with campuses in Mthatha, East London (Buffalo City), Butterworth, and Komani (Queenstown). It was founded on 1 July 2005 as a result of a merger between Border Technikon, Eastern Cape Technikon, and the University of the Transkei.
  • The Higher Education Act No. 101 of 1997, as modified, established Walter Sisulu University (WSU) on July 1, 2005.
  • The new institution was named after the late Walter Max Ulyate Sisulu, a close friend of Nelson Mandela in the South African liberation fight.
  • WSU was placed into management in October 2011 after the Council, Management, and WSU stakeholders requested it.
  • The Administration era concluded on April 30, 2014. Many new systems and processes have been deployed over the last two and a half years to help the university stabilize and reposition itself on a new path.
  • WSU is undergoing a major infrastructure overhaul, as well as an evaluation of the academic enterprise, ICT infrastructure, financial viability, and human resources.
  • On January 17, 2014, a new institutional law was published, and in May of the same year, a new council took over from the former administrator, Professor Lourens van Staden.
  • WSU will be a premier African comprehensive university focused on innovative educational, research, and community collaboration programs that are responsive to local, regional, and national development concerns, as well as continental and international imperatives.
